The Science Of Kissing!

As it’s Valentine’s Day we thought it appropriate to give you some fun facts about kissing and the science surrounding this show of affection.

With the average person spending two weeks of their lives kissing this is valuable information.

The study of kissing is called Philematology, its not all about the evolutionary meaning behind it, its also about how kissing is actually really good for your health and here’s why:

It involves a whole 146 muscles! 34 facial muscles and 112 postural muscles. Kissing can help keep these facial muscles toned and reduce the production of wrinkles. It burns calories at a rate of 5-26 per minute, it releases hormones, can strengthen your immune system, relieve aches and pains (no longer can a headache be used as an excuse not to have a smooch with your partner), lowers blood pressure and is a great mood booster.

More good incentives came from a study that showed that kissing your partner every morning before leaving for work can lengthen your life by five years and help you earn more money.

And now for our favourite:

Kissing can help prevent cavities!! The increased saliva flow that kissing invokes can help fight plaque therefore aiding in the prevention of cavities.

So to best prepare for this amazingly beneficial activity here is some simple advice:

Brush your teeth twice daily for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste, use interdental aids such as brushes or floss, use mouthwash (at a different time to brushing) and for that extra minty boost, sugar free mints. Visiting your dental hygienist regularly can help with a healthy mouth and fresh breath.

And your all set! Have fun. Happy Valentine’s day from all at Absolute Dental.
